The Ohio State football program is currently gearing up for the upcoming 2026 college football season, which is slated to get underway in less than a month. The Buckeyes are looking to reclaim their championship throne after sputtering down the stretch of the 2025 season and losing in the playoffs against the Miami Hurricanes.
Ohio State is bringing back considerable talent this year, especially on the offensive side of the ball, where wide receiver Jeremiah Smith remains one of the top players in the country.
Recently, Buckeyes head coach Ryan Day stopped by ESPN’s The Pat McAfee Show and dropped a hot take regarding Smith as he prepares for his junior year.
“Everything that Jeremiah Smith said he was gonna do he’s doing.. It’s the same thing on our end and with that trust you can work through anything.. He’s one of the most iconic players in the history of college football,” said Day, per Pat McAfee on X, formerly Twitter.
Smith certainly became an icon in Ohio State lore when he made the game-sealing catch in the 2024-25 national championship game against the Notre Dame Fighting Irish, breaking free in the secondary to put the game on ice and secure the Buckeyes their first title in a decade, and also the first of Day’s coaching tenure there.
This will, in all likelihood, be the final year of Smith’s run with the Buckeyes, as he is expected to be one of the top names off the board in the 2027 NFL Draft, so Ohio State will want to maximize the star’s talents as long as they have him.
Ohio State is set to kick off its new season on September 5 at home against Ball State.
