Brody Bumila named 2025-26 MaxPreps Male National Athlete of the Year

Brody Bumila of Bishop Feehan (Attleboro, Mass.) is considered one of the best prospects in high school baseball, with a fastball that regularly travels 100 miles per hour and a strikeout-per-nine rate that makes Nolan Ryan blush. On the basketball court, he led his school to a state championship while putting up Wilt Chamberlain-esque numbers.

Bumila’s lore is growing in the Northeast as the 6-foot-9, 18-year-old left-handed flamethrower attracted dozens of MLB scouts to his starts while putting together one of the most dominant major campaigns imaginable.

The Massachusetts star has been named the 2025-26 MaxPreps Men’s National Athlete of the Year.

“It means a lot to know that I worked as hard as I could for the last four years,” Bumila said. “My teammates always knew they were apart of this journey. Knowing that I wouldn’t have won a state championship in basketball without them and I wouldn’t have been where I am in baseball without them, they should take credit for that.”

While baseball is his primary sport, Bumila won the MaxPreps Massachusetts Player of the Year in basketball after leading the Shamrocks to the Division 1 state championship.

During the season, Bumila averaged 30.6 points and 15.2 rebounds per game while shooting 69.4 percent from the field. In postseason play, he averaged 40.8 points and 20.8 rebounds per contest during Bishop Feehan’s state title run.

Bumila missed his junior season of basketball and missed the spring of 2024 due to a UCL injury that required surgery on his left arm.

“Last year, we had a good chance of winning the state championship, but I got hurt.” Bumila said. “I had a lot to prove coming back because I knew it meant a lot to this community.”

That motivation was evident when Bumila had 51 points and 20 rebounds in an 89-73 win over Andover in the state semifinals and 44 points and 29 rebounds in a 94-87 overtime win over Needham in the second round.

He had 36 points, 22 rebounds and 5 assists in a legendary postseason run in a 66-63 victory over Central Catholic in the state title game.

Bumila went into baseball mode as his first game on the diamond came less than a week later on March 21st. In the season opener, he went 3-4 with a home run and two RBIs in a 13-1 win over Weymouth.

The projected first-round pick in the upcoming MLB Draft has faded this spring, allowing just five hits and five earned runs (1.02 ERA) with a 0.43 WHIP and 104 strikeouts (21.2 K/9) in 44.0 innings.

His most impressive performance of the season came in a 5-1 win over Rhode Island’s Moses Brown, who struck out 20 in a seven-inning, complete game.

Bumila did not allow a hit in his first 16.2 innings of the season.

“I have dreamed of playing in the MLB since I was four years old,” Bumila said. “So there’s always that desire and need to be different, and I’ve always believed in my dream from a very young age that I would excel in baseball.”

Bumila signed with the University of Texas, but in last week’s updated mock drafts, he went as high as 21st overall to the San Diego Padres.

“I don’t think there’s anyone better suited to handle the pressure of what Brody has been through,” Bishop Feehan baseball coach Joe Breen said. “I think the basketball season really tested him. It finally got him ready for the spring.”

Other impressive performances on the mound this spring included 12 strikeouts while allowing one hit in five innings of an 8-0 32 win over Andover in the Division 1 state tournament and striking out 12 in five hitless innings in a 3-0 Town victory.

Bumila has also been a consistent source of offense for Feehan, batting .375 with 20 RBIs, 15 runs and four home runs in 24 games.

“I think it’s great to represent Bishop Feehan,” Bumila said. “This is the community that has shaped me into the person I am today over the past four years, and I am thrilled to be able to represent them. I am proud to call myself Bishop Feehan Shamrock.”

Bishop Feehan defeated Pope Francis Prep 10-5 in the Division 1 state quarterfinals over the weekend. Bumila was 2-for-3 at the plate with a home run and also struck out seven in four innings while allowing two hits and two runs.

On Tuesday, Feehan defeated Xavierian Brothers 6-3 in the state semifinals to advance to the title game. The Shamrocks will face Catholic Memorial on Saturday in the final game of Bumila’s decorated high school career.

“He brings a high level of focus and excitement to Bishop Feehan athletics, and he will be remembered first and foremost,” Breen said. “Brody is more than just a student-athlete here. I like to say that he is an F at Feehan in all sporting events, he supports all of his classmates on the football field and all other sports. He is very involved in many different clubs at Bishop Feehan, so he is not just a one-dimensional student-athlete. He remembers everything he does here.”

Bumila is expected to make one final start in Saturday’s state championship game.

ATHLETE OF THE YEAR FINALISTS

Ohio State wrestling won its third straight state championship on the mat at 213 pounds with a 35-0 record. Boyle also racked up 123 tackles, 57 tackles for loss and 13 sacks while playing defense for the 14-0 Division III state champions. Boyle has a 103-6 career record in wrestling and has helped the football program go 30-0 with back-to-back state titles the past two seasons.

The only player to earn MaxPreps Junior All-America honors in both football and basketball, Hudson was unstoppable in both sports. He averaged 19.7 points, 13.4 rebounds, 2.7 blocks and 2.0 assists per contest to help the Bearcats reach the state basketball title. His most impressive performance came in the state championship game in a 63-60 loss to Zachary with 32 points, 24 rebounds and 7 blocks and 4 steals. Considered the No. 1 tight end prospect in the nation, Hudson had six catches for 169 yards and a touchdown in the state title game.

In basketball, he earned MaxPreps All-America honors after averaging 34.7 points, 8.4 assists, 6.2 steals and 4.6 rebounds per contest in leading Reidsville to the state title for the fourth straight season.

Despite being considered a four-star football prospect, track may be his best sport, as Mitchell won gold in the 100 meters with a time of 9.92. In net, he had nearly 1,800 all-purpose yards and 17 touchdowns to help the Panthers reach the Conference 6A Division 2 state championship game.
