LONDON — The Washington Commanders are now down two quarterbacks. Marcus Mariota, who started against the Indianapolis Colts in place of Jayden Daniels (elbow), suffered an apparent knee injury in the first quarter of Sunday’s game and is questionable to return.
Seventh-round rookie Athan Kaliakmanis took over for Mariota and is the only quarterback left for Washington. Tight end Colson Yankoff is the Commanders’ emergency quarterback.
With about seven minutes remaining in the first quarter, Mariota was sacked on third-and-5 from the Colts’ 5-yard line by Adetomiwa Adebawore and Laiatu Lutu. Adebawore pushed back rookie Matt Gulbin, who got his first start at right guard, and as Mariota stepped up in the pocket to try to avoid the pressure, he was quickly met by Lutu.
Mariota slowly jogged off the field and was briefly examined in the medical tent before he walked back to the locker room with team athletic trainers.
Mariota suffered a sprained MCL early in the Commanders’ preseason game in Detroit and missed the remainder of training camp and the preseason finale.
