Miami football news: Darian Mensah protector’s insane traits land him on Freaks List

Bruce Feldman puts the spotlight on Miami freshman offensive tackle Jackson Cantwell, and what he finds is truly remarkable

Miami football is trying to continue its recent tradition of successful transfer quarterbacks with former Duke star Darian Mensah, but in order to do that, it will also have to continue its recent tradition of developing tremendous offensive tackles. Jackson Cantwell joins the Hurricanes as one of the most eye-catching athletes in the country. All one has to do is take a gander at his physical traits and genetics to understand why the true freshman is one of the top-rated recruits in the 2026 class.

The son of two Olympic shot-putters and an elite shot-putter in his own right, Cantwell possesses a stunning blend of strength and agility. Bruce Feldman put into perspective just how imposing the Nixa, Missouri native is after slotting him at No. 4 on his annual Freaks List for The Athletic.

“At 15, he bench pressed 405 pounds for four reps, vertical jumped 31 inches and broad jumped 8-10 — at 6-8, 300 pounds,” Feldman noted. “At 16, he bench pressed 505 pounds and did a close-grip bench with 475.”

Cantwell was seemingly destined to become a juggernaut in the trenches, and he has not disappointed so far. The first offensive lineman to ever claim the Gatorade National Player of the Year title is expected to man Mensah’s blind side on the Hurricanes, making him potentially the most important member of this program. He has wasted no time in introducing himself to the team and fan base.

“The power numbers that he has produced since arriving at UM have shown just what a Freak athlete he is,” Feldman writes. “His Peak Power output is 9,461 watts. For context: Francis Mauigoa (No. 16 last year and the 10th pick in the 2026 NFL draft) measured out at 9,273 watts last year as a junior…. Cantwell’s max velocity is 17.3 mph, which is close to Mauigoa’s 17.6 in his final season at UM.”

Standing at 6-foot-8, 330 pounds, Jackson Cantwell is a mammoth of a human being. He may face an adjustment period in the ACC, but with his natural gifts and an adept Miami football coaching staff, this striking prospect should fit in quite nicely. Darian Mensah and the Hurricanes earnestly hope that the monster metrics translate to monster results this season.
