Texas Tech football has become the topic of college sports recently, as the NCAA denied Brendan Sorsby’s request to have his athletic eligibility reinstated for the 2026 season. The NCAA said that Sorsby is permanently ineligible due to the results of his gambling violations, which include the bets he made on Indiana in 2022 when he was a member of the team.
Texas Tech plans on appealing the NCAA’s decision, while Sorsby has shared his side of the story on why he made the bets in 2o22. Many have shared their thoughts about the situation, including Rece Davis on the College GameDay Podcast.
“I’m sympathetic toward the addiction aspect of it, because it’s the dopamine rush, and the desire to have skin in the game,” Davis said. “I thought the feeling and connection to the team by betting on them fell a little flat in terms of his argument, saying that he bet on Indiana because he wasn’t playing and he wanted to feel closer to them. That fell flat to me.
“What he was doing, while I’m sure it was addictive in nature, seemed to be really small bets and different things. It seems a little bit as if it might somehow diminish those who are in the throws of various addictions. It seems like a manipulative way to get the outcome that you desire. At the end of the day, that’s what a lawsuit is for anybody or any type of appeal. But that part of it probably makes me a little less sympathetic to that line of thinking.”
Sorsby has been working to fix things, and he recently completed an intensive inpatient treatment program for a gambling disorder.
It’ll be interesting to see if the NCAA decides to walk back its decision after Texas Tech’s appeal, and there’s no doubt the Red Raiders are hoping for the best.
