If head coach Jon Sumrall’s goal was to make a statement in the Florida Gators first game under his leadership, well, mission accomplished. Florida (1-0) piled up 624 yards while traversing Florida Field with ease, dominating the FAU Owls (0-1) in a 52-21 victory on Saturday night inside Ben Hill Griffin Stadium.

The Gators’ 66 total points were the most against an FBS team since 2001, and their 38 first-half points and 624 total yards were the most against an FBS team in six years, a strong opening salvo from offensive coordinator Buster Faulkner, junior quarterback Aaron Philo and junior running back Jadan Baugh, who did much of the heavy lifting in The Swamp.

Philo exited with 1:15 remaining in the third quarter, having completed 16 of 21 passes for 275 yards and three touchdowns with 20 yards rushing and another score on the ground. Baugh continued his trend of phenomenal performances, kicking off a potential Heisman Trophy campaign by gaining 160 yards (including a career-long 61-yard rush) and achieving the first three-touchdown game of his career on just 14 carries.

Not to be outdone, sophomore wide receiver Vernell Brown III had a career night of his own with his first 100+ yard game (117) and first trek into the end zone on a team-high six receptions.

While Florida never had its back against the wall — except for its first offensive series, which started inside the 10-yard line after an interception — its defensive effort will be considered subpar by Sumrall with similar struggles from last season showing their face in Game 1 under this new regime.

Let’s take a look at what went down Saturday night in The Swamp.

Florida’s offense is fun again …

It took only one game under Faulkner for the Gators to perform better on offense than they have in any FBS game since the COVID-19 pandemic began, which is quite telling. And while Baugh — and the threat of Baugh — is undoubtedly the primary reason, it was a full-team effort on Saturday night.

The offensive line will face much tougher tests coming up, but outside of a third-quarter procedural penalty, one notable missed assignment and a horrendous errant snap that flew over Baugh’s head and 20 yards down the field, it protected Philo and got Baugh off to a hot start. The downfield blocking from Florida’s wide receivers sprung him even further as multiple explosive plays immediately reminded the national audience of Baugh’s true potential. Philo also displayed plenty of toughness, shiftiness and scramble ability, which extended plays, extended drives and led to a 3-yard score in the second quarter.

Brown’s 49-yard receiving score off a properly developed screen (imagine that!) was electric, and he piled up 81 yards after the catch on the evening, including consecutive receptions of 33 and 22 yards on a single possession. Sophomore WR Dallas Wilson did not get as much work, but his three receptions for 47 yards all contributed to scoring drives. Junior WR TJ Abrams matched Baugh with the longest play of the night (63-yard reception), and senior WR Bailey Stockton, a Georgia Tech transfer, deftly tight-roped his way to the second touchdown of the night.

Faulkner showed a willingness to spread the field, hunker down with inside running plays, send pairs of tight ends on routes and even run a gadget play. The only offensive failures on the evening were player-caused: the aforementioned direct snap to Baugh and a Philo interception that was actually a drop by senior WR Micah Mays Jr. into a defender’s arms.

… though its defense is not (yet) …

There were certainly flashes from the unit led by Sumrall and defensive coordinator Brad White, but giving up 28 points to the Owls — despite their extreme number of possessions due to the Gators’ scoring proficiency — is unacceptable. Florida struggled early to slow down FAU’s high-tempo offense and regularly to get any pressure in the backfield.

The Gators were one of the worst defensive teams in the SEC last season — particularly up front — and there were few signs that the unit had truly improved this offseason. The lone standout plays were a deflection at the line of scrimmage by sophomore defensive lineman Jeremiah McCloud, who registered two quarterback hurries, and a fourth-down tackle inside the 5-yard line by senior DL Brendan Bett midway through the fourth quarter. UF only registered one combined sack and six tackles for loss.

The secondary similarly repeated struggles from 2025, particularly the cornerbacks, who were unable to get their heads around multiple times in coverage. Sophomore J’Vari Flowers was unprepared for a snap, which led to FAU’s one touchdown of the second half, and sophomore Ben Hanks III committed an unnecessary pass interference penalty in the first half that extended a drive on third down.

Florida did not necessarily attack with the ferocity Sumrall promised, though it generally takes defense longer to gel than offense to start a season, especially under a new coaching staff. The Gators did register two takeaways, though, with senior safety DJ Coleman, a Baylor transfer, ending the Owls’ first drive with an interception, and senior cornerback Dijon Johnson returning to the field from injury with an interception that broke the game open late in the second quarter.

“Still got a lot of questions on defense. We got a lot of room to grow,” Sumrall said after the game.

More to come — stay tuned!

Odds & ends

Florida improved to 5-0 all-time against FAU with an average victory margin of 29.2 points per game … the Gators are now 90-30 all-time in season openers (73-8 in Gainesville) … Sumrall is 4-1 in season openers (lone loss to Ole Miss at Troy) with an average margin of 19.8 points per game … first-year coaches are 19-6 in their opening games at UF with nine straight victories … Florida’s defense has forced turnovers in 23 of the last 25 games with multiple takeaways in 17 of those contests … the Gators have given up 21+ points in 10 straight games … Sumrall is now 46-6 against unranked opponents with two bowl games defeats (one to UF) … Florida has scored in 474 consecutive games, an NCAA record
