NFL teams get new Sorsby warning after 2027 draft decision

[ad_1]

Shortly after it was learned on Tuesday that controversial quarterback prospect Brendan Sorsby will not pursue litigation regarding the NFL’s lack of a supplemental draft this summer, Sorsby said via a statement that he was now “fully committed to being the best version of myself that I can be while getting ready for” the standard 2027 NFL Draft.

It was previously mentioned that Sorsby could try to join a junior college football program in July. However, Matt Baker of The Athletic noted on Wednesday that Sorsby will play “nowhere” before he begins preparing for next year’s draft. Baker also said that Sorsby “will instead become the latest figure to take a de facto gap year between his college football career and the NFL.”

Why Brendan Sorsby completing a “gap year” could scare NFL teams

“If there’s a perfect parallel to the Sorsby case — a player landing himself in college/pro limbo after betting on his own team — we couldn’t find one,” Baker wrote about whether or not Sorsby will ultimately find success in the NFL.

Of course, Baker was referencing how the NCAA deemed Sorsby ineligible to play during the upcoming college football season after the signal-caller admitted to betting on Indiana football while he was on the team and on other sports. The Canadian Football League confirmed on June 26 that it would not “register a contract for” Sorsby. Meanwhile, the next UFL campaign won’t get underway until March 2027.

“The uncertainty surrounding the 2020 pandemic led to a wave of opt-outs that fall as players prioritized some combination of health concerns, family issues and a desire to start preparing for the next level,” Baker explained. “The NFL did not seem bothered by its season off; four opt-outs (Ja’Marr Chase, Penei Sewell, Micah Parsons and Rashawn Slater) were drafted in the top 13 picks in 2021. They’ve combined for 16 Pro Bowl appearances. On the other side, quarterback Jamie Newman was a big-name transfer after going from Wake Forest to Georgia but never suited up for the Bulldogs. He went undrafted and was briefly with the Eagles before spending 2022 in the CFL.”

One likely can’t help but notice that none of the four opt-outs spotlighted by Baker play the sport’s most important position. In short, Sorsby is somewhat on an island as it pertains to his unique situation.

Brendan Sorsby will try to follow in the footsteps of a Hall of Famer

Long before quarterback Roger Staubach became a Hall of Famer, the Navy legend had to fulfill his military commitment.

“Staubach, the 1963 Heisman Trophy winner, was out of the game for four seasons and did a tour of duty in Vietnam before leading the Cowboys to a pair of Super Bowl wins,” Baker added.

On Tuesday, NFL Draft guru Todd McShay of The Ringer shared that Sorsby has been invited to play in the next Senior Bowl. While one can understand that Sorsby may not want to risk getting injured during a junior college football game, one can’t help but wonder how rusty he will look the next time he faces a live defense on a field.
