Indiana football is a different program under Curt Cignetti. The Hoosiers are the defending national champions, while Indiana has made the playoffs two straight years under Cignetti.
With Michigan winning in 2023 and then Ohio State winning in 2024, the Big Ten has won three straight National Championships. It was the first time the SEC did not have a claim to a national championship for three straight seasons since four straight from 1999 through 2002, when Florida State, Oklahoma, Miami and Ohio State won each title. Now, Cignetti is taking aim at the SEC, per Brett McMurphy of On3.
“We don’t run a hype machine up here in the Midwest. We believe everything is earned, not given. When we fall short, we say we fall short. When we don’t win, we don’t cry a river. We don’t whine & complain. That’s why we’re the best,” Cignetti said.
The SEC is getting multiple teams into the playoffs each year. In the 2024-25 playoffs, Tennessee, Texas, and Georgia all made the playoffs, but only Texas even made it semi-final. Texas would fall to Ohio State, while Notre Dame defeated Penn State before losing to Ohio State in the final. Last year, Oklahoma, Alabama, Ole Miss, Texas A&M, and Georgia all made the playoffs. Still, only Ole Miss made it to the semifinal. They lost to Miami in the Fiesta Bowl, which would go on to lose to Indiana.
This year, Texas is expected to be able to contend for the National Championship, along with Georgia, Texas A&M, and Oklahoma. Still, they have to get past the trio of Ohio State, Indiana, and Oregon from the Big Ten.
