Just days after spending time with the New England Patriots in a coaching capacity during training camp, the former All-Pro wide receiver is officially making the jump to the college ranks.
According to On3’s Matt Zenitz and Kelly Quinlan, Georgia Tech has hired DeAndre Hopkins as an assistant wide receivers coach.
“Georgia Tech has hired former NFL star receiver DeAndre Hopkins as an assistant wide receivers coach, sources tell Kelly Quinlan and me for On3. The former Clemson WR was recently in a coaching role with the Patriots in training camp. CBS first reported he was being targeted to join GT staff.”
It’s an exciting addition for the Yellow Jackets. Hopkins put together one of the most accomplished receiving careers of his generation, earning multiple Pro Bowl and All-Pro selections while starring for several NFL franchises. His elite route running, ball skills, and ability to make contested catches made him one of the league’s most respected receivers for more than a decade.
Hopkins was a very instinctual player. While that is almost impossible to teach, Hopkins has a great opportunity in front of him — the opportunity to pass that knowledge on to the next generation.
Hopkins recently worked alongside the Patriots during training camp, signaling that coaching was something he wanted to pursue after his playing career. Georgia Tech has now given him his first full-time opportunity to develop young receivers. His Clemson roots also keep him familiar with the ACC, where he became one of college football’s top playmakers before launching a stellar NFL career.
For Georgia Tech, adding someone with Hopkins’ résumé is a major recruiting and developmental win.
