Southern University head coach Marshall Faulk is entering his first season leading the Jaguars, and the Pro Football Hall of Famer is being candid about the learning curve that comes with the job. In a video obtained by Toyloy Brown III of The Advocate during Southern’s recent football practice, Faulk admitted that he’s still adjusting to the demands of being a head coach.
“I’m not comfortable with being a head coach yet. It’s just all honesty. I don’t know if there’s comfort in being a head coach. Every day when I lay down there is a problem — when I wake up there’s a problem. So there’s no real comfort in that.”
While Faulk acknowledged the challenges of the position, he said the support system around him has made the transition much easier.
“I should say the comfort is in my athletic director. It’s in my board. In my chancellor — my president,” Faulk said. “Them helping me to resolve whatever those problems are so that we can put the best product on the field. That’s the comfort. And knowing that I have that help around me to put the best out on the field.”
Faulk was introduced as Southern’s head coach in December after a decorated NFL career, taking over one of the most tradition-rich programs in HBCU football. During SWAC Football Media Day in July, Faulk explained why Southern was the right place to begin his coaching career.
“Impact is everything. When you decide to become a head coach, you’re going to impact kids’ lives. When I think about how I was impacted and what happened for me, it happened in the state of Louisiana. If I was going to take on a task like being a head coach and mentoring kids and helping kids get to where they want to get to in life, there wasn’t a better place for it than Louisiana.”
He added that the opportunity came together naturally after Southern Athletic Director Roman Banks reached out once again about the position.
“It just so happened that Southern needed a head coach. I believe it was just serendipitous that I was available. They were in need and that we were able to put it together. Having my A.D., Roman Banks, reach out was the second time that we had explored this. I was thankful that we were able to really have it work out this time.”
Faulk now begins the challenge of restoring one of the premier brands in HBCU football. Southern enters the 2026 season in a highly competitive SWAC that includes defending conference champion Prairie View A&M in the West Division. The Jaguars will open Faulk’s head coaching tenure on Aug. 29 against Andrew Body and Alabama State, the preseason favorite to win the SWAC East Division.
