SMU Mustangs quarterback Kevin Jennings suffered a finger injury during the program’s fall camp before the 2026-27 season.
The SMU Mustangs are hopeful for a successful 2026-27 campaign after finishing last year with their seventh-straight winning season. Unfortunately, the program may have received a brutal blow, as star quarterback Kevin Jennings suffered an injury during fall camp.
Reports indicate that the redshirt junior sustained a finger injury, according to Billy Embody of On3 Sports. Head coach Rhett Lashlee claimed that Jennings will be a limited participant in practices for now. It’s said that Ty Hawkins will now take first-team reps in practices.
“Rhett Lashlee announced Kevin Jennings will be limited with a right finger injury.”
Pete Nakos of On3 Sports stated that Jennings suffered the injury in his right index finger on Friday, August 7, at some point after practice. It does not appear to be a serious injury, as Jennings will only be limited for one to two weeks.
“SMU QB Kevin Jennings injured his right index finger Friday after practice and will be limited for a week or two, per Rhett Lashlee.”
That means Jennings will either return by mid-August or late-August. Either way, he and the Mustangs have plenty of time to prepare for the upcoming season, as SMU’s first game of the year isn’t until September 7 in a Week 1 matchup against the Florida State Seminoles.
Kevin Jennings has shown steady progress each season of his collegiate career so far. He ended last year with 3,641 passing yards and 26 touchdowns while completing 66.1% of his pass attempts. Jennings also added four more scores on the ground, but did throw a career-high 13 interceptions.
