Kansas City Chiefs kicker Harrison Butker connected on a 69-yard field goal on the final play of the first half in his team’s preseason game against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on Saturday.
As preseason statistics are not official, Butker’s official career long is 62 yards, a kick he made against the Buffalo Bills in the 2022 regular season. Butker has made a kick from at least 53 yards in each of his nine NFL seasons, dating back to 2017. He also holds the record for the longest field goal in Super Bowl history, a 57-yarder in the team’s win over the San Francisco 49ers in February 2024.
The record for the longest field goal in NFL history is 68 yards, set by Jacksonville Jaguars kicker Cam Little last season in the team’s Week 9 win over the Las Vegas Raiders. Little has become one of the faces of a new league trend that has seen kickers attempting and making longer field goals. He connected on a 67-yarder in Week 18 last season, giving him the two longest official field goals in NFL history. The latter is also a record for the longest outdoor field goal, as it took place at EverBank Stadium in Jacksonville.
Little famously made a 70-yard field goal last year in the preseason; it stands as the longest kick made in NFL history, even if it doesn’t officially count.
Butker’s 69-yarder on Saturday came after the Bucs turned the ball over on downs at the Kansas City 49-yard line with eight seconds left in the half. The Chiefs sent Butker out for the kick, which not only split the uprights but also had enough distance that it landed in the front row of the seats behind the goal posts.
Butker has been one of the premier kickers in the NFL over the past decade. His 2024 contract extension made him the highest-paid kicker in NFL history, a mark he held until this offseason, when he was passed by Ka’imi Fairbairn of the Houston Texans, Brandon Aubrey of the Dallas Cowboys and Chris Boswell of the Pittsburgh Steelers.
