Nick Saban passing the torch to Kalen DeBoer remains a hot button topic for Alabama football. Saban even defended DeBoer amid the criticism for the latter. But his defense lured in the always outspoken ESPN personality Paul Finebaum Wednesday.
Finebaum didn’t hesitate to rip the legendary Crimson Tide head coach for backing DeBoer.
“Stop it, coach,” Finebaum first said on his appearance with “Get Up.”
Finebaum added: “I mean, we’re talking about the University of Alabama here. We’re not talking about some off-brand school in the middle of nowhere.”
The ESPN personality, who was a radio show host in Alabama, pointed out how different the Tide were under Saban.
“Alabama was number one in the country for, at some point 15 straight years, they were the favorite, I think in all but one game during a 16-game stretch,” Finebaum said. “And Nick Saban’s now trying to dumb down the DeBoer expectations, and I’m not having it.”
Yet Finebaum adds that Alabama hasn’t had much of a talent drop off post Saban.
“Alabama still has great players; they still have everything that you have to have, and I just don’t like the fact that the former coach is trying to soft pedal his successor,” Finebaum said. “It’s like the dad, you know, telling the young son, ‘It’s okay if you strike out at the Little League game.’ It’s not okay at Alabama. That’s the problem a lot of people have with Kalen DeBoer.
Finebaum continued to question if DeBoer has the right “DNA” to lead Alabama, especially after going an underwhelming 20-8 in two seasons there. Still, Saban remains a backer of DeBoer.
