Arch Manning was supposed to have a special season in 2025. Many had him penciled in for appearances at the Heisman Trophy Ceremony and the 2026 NFL Draft. But he was a no-show at both events. The Texas football quarterback fell well short of the mammoth expectations that were set for him. One extreme turned into another, as the prodigy was labeled as a fraud. Like usual, the truth lied somewhere in the middle, but there is still a chance it could settle closer to the former.
Manning eventually improved, but during one of his lowest moments, he received counsel from a Longhorns legend.
“Last year, I remember after maybe the UTEP game, when I didn’t play well at all, I actually talked to Colt McCoy, which was really cool because he played at UT,” Manning told Matt Barrie on SportsCenter. “There was questions I could ask, and he had been through some of the same stuff, so that was really cool of him to reach out. We talked, we had dinner, so it was a really cool experience for me.”

Manning completed only 11-of-25 passes for 114 yards while throwing one touchdown and one interception during the aforementioned home matchup versus UTEP. Texas pulled out a 27-10 victory, thanks in part to the famous signal-caller’s two rushing scores, but genuine skepticism started to rise. Although the regular season ultimately ended in disappointment, things could have been worse if Manning did not get valuable advice from No. 12.
Yes, the New Orleans, Louisiana native has the luxury of turning to uncles Peyton and Eli Manning, but it is incredibly beneficial to meet one-on-one with a player who knows what it is like to perform at a high level in Austin. Colt McCoy, a two-time Heisman finalist and two-time All-American, has loads of wisdom to offer Manning. There was definite growth last season, and fans are anticipating more in 2026.
Following a campaign in which he completed 61.4 percent of his passes for 3,163 yards and 26 touchdowns, while rushing for 399 yards and 10 more TDs, the redshirt junior looks to take the next step and lead Texas football back to FBS glory. McCoy and the rest of Longhorn Nation will be watching closely.
