Calais Campbell’s brother charged with murder after mother’s death

Baltimore Ravens defensive end Calais Campbell’s brother, Ciarre Campbell, was charged Tuesday in Atlanta with murder after the death of the brothers’ mother, Nateal Campbell.

According to multiple reports, police found Nateal, 71, dead during a welfare check Monday. Nateal Campbell’s throat was cut, according to the reports, and authorities found Ciarre Campbell in possession of a knife.

Ciarre Campbell was arrested by the Atlanta Police Department and booked into Fulton County Jail. He was charged with aggravated assault, possession of a firearm or knife and murder. The Athletic has reached out to his attorney and police for comment.

“We are devastated to share that the Campbell Family has lost its matriarch, Mrs. Nateal Campbell,” the family said in a statement. “While the details of her passing are still being investigated, we take comfort in knowing she is reunited with our father, her beloved Chuck, and in the arms of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. We ask for privacy at this time so that we may honor her and share in our overwhelming grief privately and as a family.”

Calais Campbell, an 18-year NFL veteran, spent nine seasons with the Arizona Cardinals before stints with the Jacksonville Jaguars, Ravens, Atlanta Falcons and Miami Dolphins, in a career that has included six Pro Bowl appearances. After a return to the Cardinals last season, he signed a one-year, $5.5 million contract to return to the Ravens in May.

In a statement released Wednesday, the Ravens said, “We are incredibly saddened to learn about the passing of Calais Campbell’s mother. We extend our deepest condolences and full support to Calais and his family during this difficult time. We ask that everyone please respect their privacy while they grieve from this heartbreaking loss.”
