The College Football Playoff is heading towards expansion. Everyone seems to have an opinion on the playoff expansion and how many teams should be included in the playoffs. Urban Meyer just fought back on the idea of playoff expansion, claiming 24 teams is too many.
Now, Big Ten commissioner Tony Petitti is making his argument, but also noting how it is odd he even has to make it, according to Bryan Fischer and Pat Forde of Sports Illustrated.
“When I was at [Major League Baseball], we never had to convince anybody that keeping more teams in the race is better for everybody in advance,” Petitti said at Big Ten spring meetings last week. “We never had to do that. I feel like in this [college football] space that we’re kind of being asked to do that.”
The reason for the argument is simple. The college football regular season is one of the most exciting regular seasons, with just 12 games to prove a team’s worth. Greg Sankey, the SEC Commissioner, noted that keeping the integrity of the regular season is of the utmost importance.
“It’s incredibly important we maintain and continue to support the regular season,” Sankey said.
Still, Petittie is arguing that late-season games could have more importance, as more teams have a chance to make it to the playoffs. MAC commissioner Jon Steinbrecher wants a study done on the potential impact on the regular season.
“The football regular season is the most valuable college sports property there is,” Steinbrecher says. “Any [playoff] expansion needs to be fully, fully examined. Both what it means for the postseason, but also the regular season.”
Expansion is coming, but until a final plan is put together, there will be arguments on what is best for the sport.
