INDIANAPOLIS — Indianapolis Colts wide receiver Keenan Allen was arrested early Sunday morning in downtown Indy and charged with operating a motor vehicle while intoxicated, hours after he made his preseason debut at Lucas Oil Stadium, according to an Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department report.
Allen, 34, was charged with DWI/DUI/OWI endangering a person and DWI/DUI/OWI with a blood alcohol level of .08 or more, according to the IMPD report. The charges Allen faces are Class A and C misdemeanors, respectively. A Class A misdemeanor carries a penalty of up to one year in jail and a maximum fine of $5,000, per Indiana law. A Class C misdemeanor carries a penalty of up to 60 days in jail and a maximum fine of $500.
“We are aware of the incident involving Keenan Allen last night. We are in the process of gathering more information and have no further comment at this time,” the Colts said in a statement.
Allen was arrested Sunday morning after the police conducted a traffic investigation involving Allen in the 100 block of South Meridian Street, according to the police report. According to an IMPD statement, officers conducted the investigation after they observed a vehicle park in a no-parking zone. “Officers spoke to the driver, later identified as 34-year-old Keenan Allen, and noticed signs of intoxication,” IMPD said in its statement.
The incident occurred at 1 a.m. ET Sunday and was reported at 3:09 a.m. ET. Allen was taken to the Marion County Jail and booked, according to online jail records, before being released at 3:49 p.m. Allen is slated to appear in court on Sept. 16, three days after the Colts’ season opener against the Baltimore Ravens.
Allen’s agent has not responded to a request for comment.
Hours before Allen’s arrest, Colts owner Carlie Irsay-Gordon praised Allen in her first public comments since the team signed the six-time Pro Bowler to a one-year deal worth up to $8.32 million earlier this month.
“I think he just brings so much professionalism. He brings so much expertise,” Irsay-Gordon said while appearing on the local TV broadcast of Saturday’s game. “He’ll play a great role. He’ll give us more depth, and he just really lives our values, too. He’s a great guy.”
Allen signed his deal with the Colts on Aug. 19. After participating in four practices, he played in the Colts’ preseason finale Saturday against the Detroit Lions and recorded one catch for 24 yards in Indy’s 25-16 loss. Allen said afterward that he was excited to get back on the field as he begins his 14th NFL season.
“I just love the game,” Allen said. “It’s about playing, being in the locker room, meeting guys, building relationships, and it always goes back to the game.”

Allen is one of just 18 players in NFL history with 1,000 receptions. He has recorded more catches (1,055), receiving yards (12,051) and touchdowns (70) than the rest of the Colts’ receivers combined. After his preseason debut Saturday, Allen said if the season started Sunday, he would be ready. However, Allen’s availability for the season opener against the Ravens could be in jeopardy.
NFL commissioner Roger Goodell has the power to review Allen’s arrest and “may impose a fine, suspension, or other appropriate discipline if a player is convicted of or admits to a violation of the law … relating to the use of alcohol,” according to the NFL’s policy and program on substances of abuse. A first-time offense, without any other aggravating circumstances — such as but not limited to “felonious conduct, extreme intoxication (BAC of .15% or more), property damage or serious injury or death to the player or a third party, and/or if the player has had prior drug or alcohol-related misconduct” — warrants a three-game suspension without pay, per the policy.
