Grambling State announced the return of legendary quarterback Bruce Eugene to the coaching staff under Mickey Joseph.
Grambling State is bringing back a recognizable name to join Mickey Joseph’s coaching staff. Per a release by the institution on Monday, legendary quarterback Bruce Eugene is returning to the institution as quarterbacks coach and passing game coordinator. Before officially stepping into the role, Eugene served as a scouting assistant on Syracuse University’s staff.
In a statement, Joseph spoke glowingly about the return of Eugene.
“Bruce is a special addition to our coaching staff because he understands what it means to be a quarterback at Grambling State,” Joseph said. “He has been in that position, he has had tremendous success at this level, and he understands the expectations that come with playing quarterback at Grambling. His knowledge of the position, his experience and his passion for this university will be tremendous assets for us. We are excited to welcome Bruce back home.”
In July, Joseph confirmed that they had been discussing bringing Eugene back to the team.
“He’s one of the people we’re talking to; we have three or four people we’re talking to,” Joseph said in a quote obtained by the Ruston Daily Leader. “We’ll have this thing cleared up by next week for sure.”
Eugene is widely considered one of the greatest quarterbacks in both Grambling and SWAC history. He played from 2001 to 2005, winning SWAC Offensive Player of the Year twice in his tenure, as well as being a three-time finalist for the Walter Payton Award. He led Grambling State to four SWAC championships and four HBCU national championships, finishing his career with 13,580 passing yards and 140 touchdown passes.
Eugene also boasts coaching experience outside of Grambling, including a stint at Syracuse, serving as offensive coordinator at Alcorn State, and a stint as quarterbacks coach at Grambling State under former head coach Melvin Spears. He also has experience working with the New York City Public Schools Athletic League as a quarterbacks coach and offensive coordinator, and eventually became head football coach at Grand Street Campus, located in Brooklyn, New York.
Eugene now returns to Grambling State, a program he helped shape at the turn of the new millennium.
