Indiana didn’t just build high school gyms. They built cathedrals.
14 of the 16 largest high school gymnasiums in the entire United States are located in one state. Not in Texas, not in California, not in New York. Indiana. And most people have never even heard this story.
We’re talking about buildings that dwarf most college arenas. The New Castle Fieldhouse holds over 8,400 people after its 2020 renovation, making it the single largest high school gym on the face of the earth. Let that sink in. A high school. Over eight thousand seats. The energy inside that building on a Friday night in January is something you have to experience to believe.
And New Castle isn’t even alone. Seymour’s Lloyd E. Scott Gymnasium fits 8,228 fans. East Chicago’s Baratto Athletic Center pushes past 8,000. The Muncie Fieldhouse has been packing in crowds since 1928. Marion’s Bill Green Arena has retired jersey numbers hanging from the rafters like it’s the NBA.
This isn’t an accident. This is a culture that was built deliberately, passionately, and over generations. Indiana took high school basketball and turned it into something sacred. These gyms are the proof.
In this video we break down the history, the numbers, and the stories behind these legendary buildings and explain exactly why Indiana became the undisputed home of high school basketball in America.
