It didn’t take Brewers ace Jacob Misiorowski long to recapture the Major League strikeout lead from Dylan Cease during his Memorial Day start against the Cardinals — and the way the Miz was throwing early, a no-hitter wasn’t out of the question until a sixth-inning single by Pedro Pagés.
With a 1.89 ERA and 88 strikeouts entering play Monday, Misiorowski has been one of the most dominant pitchers in the game this year, and every weapon in his arsenal was on display in the early innings Monday. The 24-year-old righty picked up his 10th strikeout of the afternoon with the first out of the fifth inning, and he had plenty more in the tank.
Misiorowski, who floated the possibility of hitting 105 mph on the radar gun in a recent appearance on Mookie Betts’ podcast, backed up his confidence by reaching multiple velo records before his day was complete.
The 6-foot-7 right-hander established a new high for pitches 100 mph or faster in a single game during the pitch-tracking era (since 2008) when he threw his 48th in the sixth inning Monday. He finished with 57 such pitches in his seven innings, comfortably eclipsing Reds right-hander Hunter Greene’s previous record of 47, set on Sept. 17, 2022.
With a 102-mph swinging strikeout of Nolan Gorman in the seventh inning, Misiorowski tied another mark Greene established that day, recording a ninth strikeout on a pitch of at least 100 mph. That K was Misiorowski’s 11th on the day, and he tied his personal career high with No. 12 a batter later.
While they were baffled by Misiorowski much of the day, the Cardinals did bring home a run against him, snapping his scoreless-innings streak at 29 1/3 on Iván Herrera’s sixth-inning RBI groundout.
In his seven innings of one-run, two-hit ball, Misiorowski walked one and struck out 12, becoming the Majors’ first pitcher this season with 100 strikeouts. He trimmed his ERA to 1.83.
