Kyle Shanahan says Jed York’s arrest won’t distract 49ers: ‘It has no effect on us’

San Francisco 49ers coach Kyle Shanahan said he has talked to 49ers owner Jed York and expressed concern for his family after York’s arrest over the weekend, but he added that the news will have no bearing on the football team.

“From a football standpoint, it has no effect on us,” Shanahan said after practice Tuesday, adding he spoke with York on Monday and Tuesday. “It hasn’t been mentioned in a meeting today. It doesn’t have to do with what happens on the field. Everything outside of there, I think you guys (the media) can judge that better than me.”

Asked whether York’s arrest and Shanahan’s July car accident — which left him with several injuries, including a concussion that limited him at the start of training camp — could distract the team, the coach replied, “No. Just questions you gotta answer.”

“I don’t think (York’s arrest) pertained to our players much,” he added. “Me getting in a car accident, I think that’s kind of a joke that people think that that’s a distraction to our team. So I think it’s been training camp as usual.”

Linebacker and team captain Fred Warner echoed that message.

“We’re so hyperfocused on what we do on the field, in here, in the building,” he said. “It truly is all about football.”

York, who has been the franchise’s CEO since 2008 and became the principal owner in 2024, was arrested Sunday morning at a mobile home park in East Palestine, Ohio, after he responded to an undercover advertisement on a “known prostitution website” and arranged a meeting with an officer posing as a woman, according to an incident report from the Mahoning Valley Law Enforcement Task Force.

York was initially charged with engaging in prostitution and possessing criminal tools before pleading no contest to disorderly conduct and possessing criminal tools, both misdemeanors. He was fined $1,150 and sentenced to two days in jail. The NFL is reviewing the matter under its personal conduct policy, and York could face discipline.

Shanahan emphasized that York has not been around the team during training camp this summer and has had little involvement in football decisions since hiring Shanahan and general manager John Lynch in 2017. As a result, the coach said, there will be “no difference” for the team as it prepares for the season, which starts Sept. 10 against the Los Angeles Rams in Australia.

“Jed’s trusted over the football to people who are involved in football,” he said. “And players feel that. I’ve been in too many other buildings where things do trickle down. … Here, it’s pretty black and white for them. They know it’s always football decisions. Everything’s always been football decisions because they know Jed’s put us in charge of making those.”

Shanahan said the news hit closer to home on a personal level, given his relationships with York and his wife, Danielle Belluomini York. Jed York filed for divorce in May, according to Santa Clara Superior Court documents, and the case is still active.

“Obviously it’s a very tough situation,” Shanahan said. “It’s extremely fresh. It’s a very, very personal situation. I got a lot of respect for Jed. I got a lot of respect for Danielle. Their family does mean a lot to me. With it being this personal, I’m trying hard to keep it that way.”
