With the Michigan football program preparing for the 2026 season, there is no denying that the team has been through a lot of drama when it comes to the past several seasons. Aside from former Michigan football head coach Sherrone Moore’s scandal and the sign-stealing story with Jim Harbaugh and Connor Stallions, Kyle Whittingham is looking to be a catalyst in turning the page.
Speaking at Big Ten Media Day on Thursday, Whittingham would get real when talking about the negativity surrounding the program, emphasizing how it’s the team’s “reality.”
“There has been a lot of drama, as I mentioned before,” Whittingham said, via On3 Sports. “We hope that we’ve come to the end of that, and we’re ready to proceed just with the business of playing football, winning football, graduating players, and putting the emphasis on things that should have the emphasis. But there was some unfortunate things that happened. That’s not my place to speak out on it. I wasn’t there, and I was not involved.”
“But, I can tell you right now that we’ve got a really hungry and willing group of players that have worked their tails off for the last seven months,” Whittingham continued. “They’re eager to get the season started. We’ve got very good leadership as well. I’m just excited to make the first thing first, which is graduating and winning football games.”
At any rate, it remains to be seen if Whittingham will be the head coach to overshadow the Wolverines’ past drama with winning football, which will be the main focus heading into 2026. The Michigan football team looks to improve after finishing with a 9-4 record, 7-2 in conference play, losing to Texas in the Citrus Bowl, as the program opens up the 2026 season against Western Michigan on Sept. 5.
