In 2007, Barcelona faced Espanyol in La Liga. During the match, Lionel Messi scored a goal using his hand. The referee allowed the goal, but replays later showed it was a handball, making it one of the most controversial moments of the season. Years later, in the 2022 FIFA World Cup quarterfinal between Argentina and the Netherlands, Messi was involved in another controversial handball incident. During the match, he handled the ball, but the referee did not award a foul or show him a yellow card. The decision sparked widespread debate among fans, players, and pundits after the game. Because of these two incidents, some fans compared Messi’s controversial handball moments with Diego Maradona’s famous “Hand of God” goal against England in the 1986 World Cup quarterfinal, one of the most debated goals in soccer history.
