In Year 4 with the Hurricanes, he has reached his best peak to date. He coached the squad to the national championship game last season, falling to the Indiana Hoosiers at Hard Rock Stadium. This was the program’s best results since the early 2000s, showing the significance of Cristobal’s success.

His efforts earned him his next contract with the Hurricanes, per On3 insider Brett McMurphy. Cristobal secured a contract extension that will see him stick around with Miami for the next couple of seasons.

“Cristobal plans to make a substantial donation to the University as part of UM’s on-going commitment to athletic excellence, a source said,” McMurphy wrote.

What lies ahead for Mario Cristobal, Miami amid contract news

Mario Cristobal and the Miami Hurricanes have a lot of work to do if they wish to get back to the national championship game.

Starting off slow with a 5-7 record in 2022, Cristobal has since gifted Miami a winning season for the next three years. He currently has a 35-19 overall record with the Hurricanes, going 18-14 in ACC Play.

Last season marked the program’s best under Cristobal’s leadership. They finished with a 13-3 overall record, including a 6-2 display against ACC opponents.

Despite being unable to reach the ACC Championship Game, Miami did enough to earn an At-Large bid to the College Football Playoff. It was there where they left their mark on the nation, beating Texas A&M, Ohio State and Ole Miss en route to the national championship game. They went down fighting against Indiana in the 27-21 loss.

Miami will have its season go underway on the road, taking on the Stanford Cardinal. That matchup takes place on Sept. 4 as kickoff commences at 9 p.m. ET.
