It was a solid first season for Bryce Underwood at Michigan. Still, there was upheaval around him, and some ups and downs during the year. Underwood decided to return to Michigan for a second season. Multiple people, including players, are noticing the improvement of Underwood.
Now, the quarterback is claiming he is just scratching the surface of what he can do, per Chris Low of On3.
“Yeah, I’ve just touched the ground a little bit, sort of got my feet wet a little bit,” Underwood said with a smile. “I feel like that’s all anybody has seen from me.”
Underwood passed for 2,428 yards and 11 touchdowns with nine interceptions in his freshman season. He also ran for 392 yards and six scores. Still, Underwood did not make many explosive plays. The team has just 12 passing plays of over 30 yards, which was tied for 111th in the nation. The team is bringing back some playmakers, while adding transfers JJ Buchanana and Jaime French. They also have Salesi Moa and Travis Johnson, who are expected to contribute as freshmen.
“I’ve got to use the guys around me. That’s on me, to find out what they do best,” Underwood said. “I feel like we’re in a great space with the right mindset. I’m here for my team no matter if it’s me running, me passing the ball or me laying a block. Whatever they need, that’s what I’m willing to do.”
Meanwhile, new Michigan coach Kyle Whittingham is confident that Jason Beck and Koy Detmer can develop Underwood.
“It’s similar to what Jason did with Devon (Dampier) at New Mexico and then bringing him with him to Utah and refining him,” Whittingham said. “It’s a matter of homing in on what he feels most comfortable doing and obviously using Bryce in the run game. Now, you’ve got to be careful. He’s a really good runner, but it’s not sustainable to run him 15 or 20 times a game. That doesn’t work. So you’ve got to pick your spots there. But he’s very good at extending plays and making a play when there’s not really one to be made. But sometimes last year, he was trying too hard to do that, and maybe instead of just throwing the ball away and living to play the next down, there were decisions that can be better. That’s where he needs to be better, and we think he will be.”
Michigan is expected to contend for a College Football Playoff spot this upcoming season. They open their season on September 5 against Western Michigan.
