The 2025 season did not end the way Notre Dame Football would have liked. They did not make the College Football Playoff, being the first team out according to the rankings. This resulted in Notre Dame skipping its bowl game after being snubbed by the CFP.
As the team gets prepared for 2026, head coach Marcus Freeman is talking about the snub, speaking on the Pat McAfee Show.
“Yeah, I don’t ever use that term we got snubbed. I say, we didn’t make the playoffs. And we didn’t do the things it took as a program to make the playoffs. So, when you own that, and do say it’s your fault, you’re able to use that to make you better,” Freeman said. “We’ve used that to evaluate, and we can’t start the season 0-2… We hope that our new process is gonna produce a better result”
Notre Dame opened with a brutal schedule to begin with. They started the season with a road trip to Miami, who would finish as the national runner-up. They lost that game 27-24. They would then play Texas A&M, but fell 41-40. From there, the team would win ten straight games, but would finish the season ranked tenth in the final CFP rankings. With the mandate of six conference champions, Tulane and James Madison, both ranked below Notre Dame, made the playoffs, while the Irish were the first team on the outside looking in.
The team that finished one spot ahead of them was Miami, as the head-to-head held weight, and Notre Dame was on the outs. This year, the Notre Dame schedule is highly favorable.
Notre Dame opens their schedule at Lambeau Field, facing Wisconsin. They then face Rice at home in Week 2, making an 0-2 start highly unlikely. Wisconsin finished just 4-8, while Rice was 5-8 after losing in the Lockheed Martin Armed Forces Bowl, making it as a 5-7 team. They then face Michigan State (4-8 in 2025), Purdue (2-10 in 2025), North Carolina (4-8 in 2025) and Stanford (4-8 in 2025). Notre Dame will not face a team coming in with a winning record from 2025 until BYU in their seventh game of the season. They also face Miami on November 7 at home. Still, the schedule is simple and should result in Notre Dame making the playoffs in 2026.
