Ohio State football wide receiver Jeremiah Smith turned down $10 million to leave the Buckeyes. Now he can go on a revenge tour after avoiding an entrance into the College Football Transfer Portal. And he’s got the Miami Hurricanes on his mind.
Smith made it vocally clear during Big Ten Media Days in Chicago Wednesday that he’s seeking revenge on “The U.”
“It’s gotta be the hometown team,” Smith told CBS’ Bud Elliott on the Cover 3 Podcast. “Miami. Gotta be. I heard it a lot every time I went back home. Got to be Miami.”
Ohio State and Smith walked into the College Football Playoffs fresh off a bye and as the defending champs. The Hurricanes arrived to the Cotton Bowl looking stagnant on offense in their 10-3 win over Texas A&M.
Except Miami jumped on OSU and didn’t let up, stunning the Buckeyes 24-14 in Arlington, Texas. Smith happened to battle talent from his home city that January evening too, as he hails from Miami Gardens.
The now junior wideout caught seven passes for 157 yards facing a loaded Miami secondary. Still, OSU never overcame its 14-0 deficit and eventually watched Miami claim the win.
So Smith is taking his third season personal. Last year’s Buckeyes fell short of a national title repeat. OSU even lost its last two games including the Miami game (fell to Indiana in the Big Ten title game). Plus this 2026 campaign is coming off as Smith’s final season of college football as he garners hefty NFL attention.
But he won’t get his hands on Miami unless both teams meet in the 12-team postseason in December/January.
