A Big Ten coach explains why Oregon football star Dante Moore stands out from other starting college quarterbacks
Rather than potentially become the handpicked franchise quarterback of the New York Jets, Arizona Cardinals or a different NFL team, Dante Moore opted to hone his skills at Oregon football for another season. There is obviously no guarantee that he will be a top-three pick in 2027, especially with the added competition he is bound to face during the combine and pre-draft process, but the Ducks star is trusting that a Dan Lanning-led coaching staff can properly prepare him for the next step.
Despite a humbling end to his breakout 2024 campaign, Moore attracted a number of supporters around the sport. One individual who has surely witnessed plenty of good QB play gave a rousing review of this 21-year-old signal-caller, drawing attention to an essential trait that so many others lack.
“Dante was exceptionally good,” a Big Ten coach told ESPN’s Adam Rittenberg. “He was the most confident back there. He had the best presence of all the guys. He looks the part, he acts the part, he controls the line of scrimmage. He throws a good ball, but he was a guy who continued to make good decisions.”
Moore underwhelmed in his freshman season at UCLA and only threw eight passes in his first year at Eugene, but he turned his game up several notches in 2025. The Detroit, Michigan native completed 296-of-412 passes (71.8 percent) for 3,565 yards and 30 touchdowns while tossing 10 interceptions. Although he showcased a great amount of raw talent, it was clear that improvements were still needed against formidable opposition.
Dante Moore posted three picks and two lost fumbles in two meetings with eventual national champion Indiana and also played sloppy in a near-loss to Iowa. Many young quarterbacks struggle versus top-notch defenses, but if this player is going to achieve success at the NFL level, he must figure out how to adapt in 2026.
An additional year at the renowned Oregon football program should offer invaluable experience and plenty of opportunities to avenge past big-game stumbles. Moore is already… relaxed in the huddle. Now, he will try to maintain his composure over the length of the new season.
Scouts will be especially dialed in during a Nov. 7 road matchup versus Ohio State.
