Penn State achieved a significant recruiting victory during the Matt Campbell era by securing a commitment from four-star 2028 quarterback James Armstrong. The local standout from Hopewell chose the Nittany Lions over offers from Pitt, Kentucky, and Florida State, citing his strong relationship with Campbell and the offensive staff, as well as the appeal of playing close to home.
As Penn State builds for the future, media analysts are drawing intriguing comparisons about the team’s immediate turnaround potential. In an article for On3, ESPN analyst Seth Davis identified the Nittany Lions as a potential “next Indiana” following Matt Campbell’s arrival. Davis highlighted that 24 former Iowa State Cyclones have followed Campbell from Ames to Happy Valley, more transfers than those brought by Curt Cignetti from James Madison to Indiana. He noted that this influx provides Penn State with an immediate, experienced core already familiar with Campbell’s coaching staff and scheme.
This dramatic roster refresh contrasts sharply with the headlines surrounding former head coach James Franklin. Speaking at the 2026 ACC Kickoff, the new Virginia Tech head coach praised his team’s offseason progress, claiming they had “won the offseason.” This statement elicited wry chuckles from Penn State fans, who had seen Franklin repeatedly win offseasons in Happy Valley without translating that hype into sustained playoff success before his departure.
