The Republican Party is preparing to hold a first-of-its-kind midterm convention in Dallas as the 2026 battle for control of Congress heats up.
The Dallas Host Committee gave media a preview of the event at the American Airlines Center, where the two-day convention will begin September 9. President Donald Trump is expected to attend.
Republicans say they plan to use the convention to highlight wins by the Trump administration and build momentum heading into the midterm elections. Democrats argue the event is a sign Republicans are concerned about potentially losing seats in Congress.
SMU political science professor Matthew Wilson says the effectiveness of the convention could depend on whether Republicans can deliver a clear, unified message on issues including affordability and inflation.
