Ted White sees Howard University matchup against Morehouse as a big game

The annual football matchup between Howard University and Morehouse College has become one of the marquee events on the HBCU football calendar in recent years. Now, with the series returning to Washington, D.C. on Oct. 17 as part of Howard’s homecoming, first-year Bison head coach and Howard legend Ted White believes the stage is set for another memorable chapter.

Speaking with Dr. Kenyatta Cavill at MEAC Media Day, White said the significance of the matchup extends far beyond football.

“When you’re talking about a Morehouse and Howard game, you’re talking about two prestigious universities with some notable alumni who graduated from those institutions and are doing major things in this country.”

White also pointed to the unique setting of this year’s contest, which returns to Howard’s campus after the schools met in the HBCU NY Classic during the previous two seasons.

“We get an opportunity not only to play them, but we get a chance to play them at homecoming. It’s going to be an amazing atmosphere.”

The matchup has become increasingly familiar in recent years.

Since the 2022 season, Howard has won each meeting between the two programs. After playing on Howard’s campus in 2023, the schools resumed the series in the HBCU NY Classic in both 2024 and 2025. This season marks a return to Washington, where the Bison will look to continue their recent success against the Maroon Tigers in front of a homecoming crowd.

White believes the atmosphere surrounding the game will make it one of the highlights of Howard’s season.

“We’ve got to see exactly how we want to make sure this game is remembered. It’s going to be a great homecoming game. I’m pretty sure it’s going to be sold out. I’m pretty sure the city is going to be jumping.”

White’s comments come at a time when Morehouse’s football future has become part of a broader conversation within HBCU athletics.

Recently, Morehouse College Athletic Director Harold Ellis argued that the Maroon Tigers are ready to compete at the FCS level if the college ever decides to pursue a move to Division I.

“I want Ashley Robinson. I want Kerry Davis. I want those guys. I want our brand… We’ve never been this high in athletics, and we’re not done,” Ellis said In an interview of Dr. Cavil’s Inside the HBCU Sports Lab. “Morehouse is coming.”

Ellis doubled down on that belief while discussing the future of Morehouse athletics.

“Next year… move us out of this division. Put us with the big dogs because I want them. I know if I get them… I can beat them now. Trust me, I’mma double up the work.”

Howard Vice President of Athletics Kery Davis welcomed the possibility, saying Morehouse would strengthen Division I HBCU athletics if it eventually made the transition.

“I welcome Morehouse coming Division I,” Davis said during the MEAC-SWAC Challenge press conference in Atlanta. “I think they would be a great asset to Division I HBCU programs.”

Davis also highlighted the similarities between the two institutions beyond athletics.

“They’re similar to us in that they have a great academic background portfolio,” Davis said.
