Tennessee football is building up an explosive backfield set to launch new fireworks on Rocky Top. Five-star David Gabriel Georges chose the Volunteers just a week ago from Wednesday. Now head coach Josh Heupel and company pulled in one more College Football Recruiting coup, beating USC and Florida State too.
Asa Barnes is joining the 2027 class in Knoxville, with Hayes Fawcett of On3/Rivals confirming the move. The three-star becomes a prized local recruiting win too, as he stars for Westview High in Martin, Tennessee.
The Vols land the state’s 24th-ranked prospect per 247Sports (No. 15 per ESPN). He pulled back the curtain on his decision with Austin Price of On3. Turns out Heupel turned to a different ball out of all things to win Barnes over.
“Coach Heup and I were playing basketball,” Barnes said to Price. “I have never done that with any other coach and I was like this is real love.”
That game of hoops became more than a shootaround between coach and recruit.
“We were just sitting there talking and chopping it up and I was like ‘this is where I can see myself,’” he said.
Tennessee is making noise through its ground attack room during the offseason. Even returning running back DeSean Bishop grabbed headlines.
The 1,000-yard rusher believes his team should’ve been in the College Football Playoffs but were “one or two plays” short. He’s ready to carry the load once again after scoring 16 touchdowns. But soon he’ll bequeath the backfield duties for Gabriel-Georges and Barnes.
