Texas Tech head coach Joey McGuire broke his silence on quarterback Brendan Sorsby’s NCAA eligibility situation during Big 12 spring meetings on Thursday.
McGuire stated he believes Sorsby made a mistake and should face consequences, but he does not believe Sorsby should be penalized for the rest of the year or his career.
The Athletic’s Chris Vannini shared McGuire’s comments on X, formerly Twitter, regarding the ruling that bars Sorsby from playing his final season.
“I do believe that he made a mistake, I do believe there should be consequences, but it’s my opinion that he shouldn’t be penalized for the rest of this year or his career.”

Sorsby’s eligibility situation stems from NCAA gambling violations tied to bets he placed on college sports while at Indiana, including games involving the Hoosiers. Texas Tech previously ruled the 22-year-old ineligible based on an agreed-upon stipulation of facts with the NCAA before the governing body denied his reinstatement request.
Sorsby entered a residential treatment program for gambling addiction earlier this spring, and McGuire publicly supported that decision. His legal team later filed a lawsuit and emergency injunction seeking immediate reinstatement for the 2026 season. Texas Tech has also stated its intent to appeal the NCAA’s ruling.
For the Red Raiders, the situation has immediate football implications. Sorsby has one year of eligibility remaining, while backup Will Hammond continues recovering from a torn ACL. McGuire said Sorsby is currently off campus with family after completing rehab and has not yet returned to the program.
As of Thursday, the Texas Tech signal-caller remains ineligible while the program pursues an appeal and his legal case continues.
