Texas Tech Red Raiders head coach Joey McGuire reveals he and the program are accepting the villain role for the 2026-27 season.
The Texas Tech Red Raiders have been spending big time money the past few years, utilizing NIL and the transfer portal to put together the most competitive roster possible. Those decisions have led the program to playing rather successfully, making a playoff appearance last season. It’s been something that made Joey McGuire claim that his team is the most hated in college football right now.
And that’s not something the 55-year-old head coach is angry about. On the contrary. Instead, McGuire is fully embracing a villain role for his Red Raiders ahead of the 2026-27 season, according to Brett McMurphy of On3 Sports.
“We’re the most hated team in college football,” McGuire claimed. “And I absolutely love it.”
McGuire believes that because Texas Tech has been so aggressive in the NIL and transfer portal era that it’s led to other programs scoffing at the Red Raiders. Going into his fifth year as the team’s head coach, McGuire wants everyone within the program to buy into this villain role.
Texas Tech reached the College Football Playoff last season. However, it was an early exit after the program was stomped 23-0 by the Oregon Ducks in the first round. Regardless, it was the first time since the 2008-09 season the Red Raiders finished with double-digit wins.
McGuire and his team will hope for a deeper run this coming campaign, as the program opens the new season with a home opener against the ACU Wildcats. Another strong year may be what finally puts Texas Tech on the map of relevancy.
