The Texas Tech Red Raiders initially planned on starting Brendan Sorsby at quarterback next season after signing him through the transfer portal. But that dream vanished after he and the program agreed to part ways after the gambling and sports betting situation came to light. With Sorsby out of the picture and the 2026-27 season on the horizon, the Red Raiders announced their official starting quarterback.
On Friday morning, Texas Tech announced that Will Hammond will be the starting quarterback next season. The Red Raiders made the announcement by posting an image of the redshirt sophomore on X, formerly known as Twitter.

Hammond has been at Texas Tech since the 2024-25 campaign. In his first two seasons with the program, he’s appeared in 12 games with four starts. He enters the new season with 1,151 career passing yards and 16 total touchdowns (nine passing, seven rushing) while completing 62.7% of his pass attempts.
Will Hammond won the job, beating out redshirt freshman Lloyd Jones III and redshirt junior transfer quarterback Kirk Francis. Texas Tech fans will get their first glimpse of Hammond under center in the Red Raiders’ Week 1 matchup against the ACU Wildcats on September 5.
As for Brendan Sorsby, he was denied entry into the NFL after the league turned him down for the Supplemental Draft. Other pro leagues also confirmed he would not be allowed to play next season, leaving Sorsby nowhere to go at the moment. However, he has been given the green light to enter the 2027 NFL Draft next year and will be spending his time preparing for that.
