Texas Tech news: When will Brandon Sorsby eligibility ruling come down?

[ad_1]

The saga around Texas Tech quarterback Brandon Sorsby is taking another step towards its conclusion. Recently, the NCAA deemed Sorsby ineligible due to his gambling scandal.

Now, Sorsby has filed for an injunction that will allow him to play for Texas Tech in 2026, with a decision expected soon, according to Pete Thamel of ESPN.

“There likely will not be a ruling today. The judge has asked for a little more information. We will have a ruling by June 15th. Probably in the upcoming days,” Thamel said, speaking to Matt Barrie on SportsCenter. “We had a two-hour hearing with your basic back-and-forth arguments from both lawyers. Brandon Sorsby was not present at this. The NCAA’s case could, simply put, be the Good Will Hunting case. You hit a cop, you’re going to jail. Brandon Sorsby bet on his own team, violated NCAA rule 10.3, you should not play college football anymore.”

The rule is simple: student-athletes are prohibited from engaging in sports wagering. It also goes further when discussing betting on your own team.

“A student-athlete involved in sports wagering on the student-athlete’s institution permanently loses all remaining regular-season and postseason eligibility in all sports,” the rule reads.

Jeffrey Kessler, who has been successful in his attempts to litigate against the NCAA, is representing Sorsby.

“He basically said all precedent in NCAA gambling cases should be thrown out because there hasn’t been a case quite like Brandon Sorsby. Brandon Sorsby has a gambling addiction, and he went and sought treatment at a facility. He spent 35-days at an inpatient rehab center,” Thamel continued. “He brought up the NCAA’s own rules as part of his argument. He says the NCAA handbook says to put student-athlete welfare first, and he argues the NCAA did not do that.”

While a final ruling on his NCAA eligibility could be coming soon, it will not be the end of the story for Sorsby. If the quarterback is not eligible for the 2026 season, Sorsby will likely enter the NFL Supplemental Draft in an attempt to continue his football career.
