BREAKING: Trump’s “Patriot Games” for Teens Skewed Nearly All White, Analysis Finds
Trump’s so called national teen Olympics has a diversity problem, and it doesn’t look like an accident.
The Patriot Games were pitched as a unifying event, bringing together two high school students from every state, territory and tribal nation to compete for a share of a 250,000 dollar scholarship prize. But instead of any real qualifying process, students were selected simply by submitting video essays about why they deserved a spot.
The result speaks for itself. The Washington Post estimates nearly 90 percent of participants are white, and many attend private Christian schools. The event’s own logic barely holds together either, with a Texas student representing Puerto Rico and a California student representing Massachusetts, hardly the broad national representation the games were supposed to showcase.
It’s not the first time this pattern has shown up either. The Presidential 1776 civics contest held earlier this year, described as the academic version of the Patriot Games, is already facing controversy after a competitor alleged his answers were incorrectly scored in a way that appeared to benefit the contest’s all white winners.
Instead of building something that actually reflected the full diversity of the country, the Patriot Games became one more example of Trump’s version of patriotism, one that celebrates loyalty to him over genuinely representing the nation he claims to lead.
