Miami football has amassed a 23-6 record over the last two seasons and is coming off a runner-up finish in the national championship game, and yet, this program was unable to win an Atlantic Coast Conference that is constantly scrutinized. Actually, the Hurricanes have not competed for an ACC championship since 2017. Actually, they have never even won a league title during their 20-plus-year tenure in the ACC. Malachi Toney can help The U capture that elusive prize.
The electric wide receiver flourished as a true freshman last season and has understandably garnered a substantial amount of support entering the new campaign. In a recent poll, the USA Today Network showed some love for Mario Cristobal’s squad. Writers are predicting Miami to finish first in the conference, and staying along that line of thinking, they are pegging Toney as the ACC Offensive Player of the Year, per USA Today’s Matthew Glenesk.
The award is typically given to quarterbacks, with Haynes King, Hurricanes star Cam Ward, Jordan Travis, Drake Maye, Kenny Pickett and Trevor Lawrence all receiving the honor since 2020. Pro Football Hall of Fame inductee and former Georgia Tech juggernaut Calvin Johnson is the last WR to secure the ACC OPOY crown, and he did so all the way back in 2006.
It took a generational talent for the voters to recognize a pass-catcher over a QB and running back. Perhaps Toney can earn that label as well. He is off to an excellent start.
The 5-foot-11 native of Liberty City, Florida recorded 109 receptions for 1,211 yards and 10 touchdowns during the 2025-26 campaign. He also added 23 carries for 113 yards and another score. Carson Beck heavily relied on the ACC Offensive Rookie of the Year, and new signal-caller Darian Mensah will likely do the same.
The Second-Team All-ACC selection controversially transferred to Miami football after leading Duke to a stunning ACC title run last year. Like both Ward and Beck, Mensah is well-positioned to post big numbers for the Hurricanes and could draw plenty of praise in 2026. Though, accoridng to USA Today, Malachi Toney is the offensive engine of this team and conference.
Argue at your own peril.
