After years of disputing and arranging games into the future, the iconic college football rivalry between USC football and Notre Dame will roll on. After what will be a lengthy hiatus, the two blue-blood college football programs will renew their rivalry starting in 2030.
The two schools have agreed to a four-game series in the Battle for the Jeweled Shillelagh, with games booked for the 2030, 2031, 2032 and 2033 seasons. The series will start in Week 1 of the 2030 season in Los Angeles before Notre Dame hosts the season-opener the following year. The 2032 and 2033 matchups will be early in the season, but exact weeks will be announced later.
“USC’s historic rivalry with Notre Dame holds a special place in the history of college football, and we are happy to resume a series that means so much to the entire Trojan Family,” said Jen Cohen, USC’s Charles Griffin Cale Director of Athletics. “It remains important for us to play this game early in the season, as it allows us to schedule competitively with our Big Ten peers and takes into account the health and best interests of our student-athletes and program. We are excited for our fans, and we look forward to more memorable matchups and unforgettable games between the Trojans and the Irish.”
Notre Dame leads the all-time series between the two teams 53-37-5. The Irish have dominated the series in recent years, winning seven of the last eight meetings with the Trojans including the last three. USC’s last win in the series was back in 2022, when Caleb Williams cemented his run to the Heisman Trophy.
Both Notre Dame and USC have plenty to focus on before the series gets renewed, as both teams come into the 2026 season with College Football Playoff and national championship aspirations. The Irish come into the season as the title favorites, while USC is under a lot of pressure to get into the CFP for the first time under Lincoln Riley.
There’s no telling what the two teams will look like in 2030 when the series resumes, but it’s safe to assume both will be near the top of the sport.
