The Minnesota Vikings’ decision to sign Kyler Murray and have him compete with J.J. McCarthy for the QB1 job was a somewhat surprising one.
It’s not usual to see a team give up on a former No. 10 pick after just one year as the starter, and that lack of confidence seemed final.
That’s why it was tough to envision a scenario where McCarthy would stand a chance in a quarterback competition.
Fast forward to today, and ESPN insider Kevin Seifert all but confirmed that, to this point, Murray is head and shoulders ahead of the Michigan product.
Kyler Murray is miles ahead of J.J. McCarthy
“You can only have a genuine competition if there is actual uncertainty about who the best quarterback on the roster is,” Seifert wrote. “…Overall, the afternoon was a reminder that McCarthy could continue along the upward trajectory he established at the end of last season — and still fall well short of matching Murray’s experience, arm talent and potential to make big plays in the passing game.”
McCarthy simply may not have enough time to win the job, either. The Vikings are built to compete right away, and they cannot afford to wait and develop him.
McCarthy might still have a future in the league, and he certainly wouldn’t be the first rookie quarterback to struggle right out of the gate.
That said, it feels like, barring a Kyler Murray injury, he just won’t get another opportunity to prove his worth in the Twin Cities.
